This is due to the fact that, in diabetic individuals, the physiological mechanism that regulates blood glucose concentration (glycemia) is deficient or absent. For this reason, blood glucose levels tend to be often too high, especially if the patient does not follow an appropriate and rigorous dietary and pharmaceutical protocol, with harmful effects on the There are two forms of diabetic retinopathy: <strong data-start=\"1073\" data-end=\"1115\">non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1120\" data-end=\"1158\">proliferative diabetic retinopathy<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"1161\" data-end=\"1578\"><strong data-start=\"1161\" data-end=\"1203\">Non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy<\/strong> is caused by exudation of blood and fluids\u2014often pinpoint or otherwise small in extent\u2014from the blood vessels of the retina, a phenomenon often accompanied by the formation of exudates. Among the most serious complications of non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy are <strong data-start=\"1473\" data-end=\"1505\">diabetic macular edema (DME)<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"1510\" data-end=\"1530\">macular ischemia<\/strong>, conditions that are very dangerous for vision.<\/p><p data-start=\"1580\" data-end=\"1917\"><strong data-start=\"1580\" data-end=\"1606\">Diabetic macular edema<\/strong> is characterized by swelling of the macula, the central area of the retina responsible for sharp and detailed vision. This ocular complication is of particular social relevance today, as it affects a high percentage of people with diabetes and is the leading cause of vision loss in the working-age population.<\/p><p data-start=\"1919\" data-end=\"2320\"><strong data-start=\"1919\" data-end=\"1939\">Macular ischemia<\/strong> occurs when one or more capillaries that bring blood to the macula become obstructed, causing ischemia in the macular tissue and sudden visual impairment, whose severity depends on the extent of the ischemia itself. This condition is particularly insidious as it often triggers a series of events that lead to the development of the <strong data-start=\"2273\" data-end=\"2319\">proliferative form of diabetic retinopathy<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"2322\" data-end=\"3036\"><strong data-start=\"2322\" data-end=\"2360\">Proliferative diabetic retinopathy<\/strong> is characterized by <strong data-start=\"2381\" data-end=\"2416\">pathological neovascularization<\/strong> caused by an insufficient supply of oxygen (hypoxia) to the retina or the optic nerve, due to occlusion of some retinal blood vessels. The retina responds to the hypoxic state by promoting the growth of new blood vessels, which however present a particularly fragile, pathological structure. This can lead, depending on the pathophysiological mechanism that is established, to various ocular complications, including <strong data-start=\"2834\" data-end=\"2857\">vitreous hemorrhage<\/strong>, the formation of an <strong data-start=\"2879\" data-end=\"2902\">epiretinal membrane<\/strong> (which in turn can lead to <strong data-start=\"2930\" data-end=\"2963\">tractional retinal detachment<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2965\" data-end=\"2983\">macular pucker<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"2989\" data-end=\"3005\">macular hole<\/strong>) and <strong data-start=\"3011\" data-end=\"3035\">neovascular glaucoma<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"3038\" data-end=\"3206\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-55f2587 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"55f2587\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"3038\" data-end=\"3411\">To diagnose diabetic retinopathy, specific tests are necessary such as <strong data-start=\"3109\" data-end=\"3147\">optical coherence tomography (OCT)<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"3152\" data-end=\"3185\">fluorescein angiography (FAG)<\/strong>. These tests allow the ophthalmologist to diagnose diabetic retinopathy before it causes damage to vision. For this reason, it is essential that patients with diabetes undergo regular eye exams, even if they have no symptoms.<\/p><p data-start=\"3413\" data-end=\"3818\">Once diagnosed, diabetic retinopathy must be monitored through frequent retinal examinations using OCT and FAG. In this way, if necessary, the patient can undergo the most appropriate therapy, which\u2014depending on the complication that has occurred\u2014may consist of <strong data-start=\"3675\" data-end=\"3695\">laser treatments<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"3697\" data-end=\"3743\">intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF drugs<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"3745\" data-end=\"3798\">implantation of slow-release intravitreal devices<\/strong>, or <strong data-start=\"3803\" data-end=\"3817\">vitrectomy<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"3820\" data-end=\"4289\">Today, thanks to advances in technique and medicine, the severe complications of diabetic retinopathy can be kept more under control. However, a definitive treatment does not yet exist, which is why the most effective and valuable weapon against this serious eye disease is <strong data-start=\"4094\" data-end=\"4108\">prevention<\/strong>, which consists in strict blood sugar control and must be carefully planned through close collaboration among the ophthalmologist, general practitioner, diabetologist, and patient.<\/p><p data-start=\"4291\" data-end=\"4506\">The risk of ocular complications in patients with diabetes increases with the duration of the disease. For this reason, in addition to prevention, diabetic patients must pay special attention to <strong data-start=\"4486\" data-end=\"4505\">early diagnosis<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"4508\" data-end=\"5025\"><strong data-start=\"4508\" data-end=\"4527\">Early diagnosis<\/strong> is an irreplaceable weapon in combating the consequences of diabetic retinopathy. In fact, it has been shown that the risk of vision loss is significantly reduced if diabetic patients undergo regular and thorough retinal monitoring. People with <strong data-start=\"4773\" data-end=\"4792\">type 1 diabetes<\/strong> should have a thorough eye exam within <strong data-start=\"4832\" data-end=\"4846\">five years<\/strong> of their diabetes diagnosis, and then once a year; people with <strong data-start=\"4910\" data-end=\"4929\">type 2 diabetes<\/strong> should instead have an eye exam <strong data-start=\"4962\" data-end=\"4993\">immediately after diagnosis<\/strong>, and then at least once a year.<\/p><p data-start=\"5027\" data-end=\"5230\"><strong data-start=\"5027\" data-end=\"5044\">Macular edema<\/strong> is the main cause of vision loss in diabetic patients, but also the risk of <strong data-start=\"5121\" data-end=\"5133\">cataract<\/strong>, even at a young age, and <strong data-start=\"5160\" data-end=\"5186\">angle-closure glaucoma<\/strong> is higher in those suffering from diabetes.<\/p><p data-start=\"5232\" data-end=\"5552\">Protecting eye health must be a <strong data-start=\"5264\" data-end=\"5302\">priority for all diabetic patients<\/strong>, even more so for <strong data-start=\"5321\" data-end=\"5333\">children<\/strong>, who have to live with the disease for many years, and for <strong data-start=\"5393\" data-end=\"5411\">pregnant women<\/strong>, in whom this condition can progress very quickly, making a thorough eye exam necessary <strong data-start=\"5500\" data-end=\"5538\">already during the first trimester<\/strong> of pregnancy.<\/p><p data-start=\"5554\" data-end=\"5784\">It is of fundamental importance that this information reaches all diabetic patients, so that <strong data-start=\"5647\" data-end=\"5674\">knowledge and awareness<\/strong> can help them manage their condition in the best possible way, safeguarding their vision and quality of life.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9214ece elementor-widget elementor-widget-spacer\" data-id=\"9214ece\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"spacer.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-spacer-inner\"><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-42b7a50 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"42b7a50\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5ca15ee\" data-id=\"5ca15ee\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>People with diabetes have a high risk of developing, over time, ocular diseases that can endanger the health of their eyes.
