It is important to understand what it is, how to treat it, and\u2014most importantly\u2014how to prevent it, especially during the summer.<\/p><p data-start=\"509\" data-end=\"905\">\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-93da616 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"93da616\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"509\" data-end=\"905\">For many people, summer is the most beautiful season of the year, offering the chance to spend more time outdoors without the burden of winter coats, scarves, or umbrellas. Because of their function, the eyes are almost constantly exposed to light, and their delicate tissues are particularly vulnerable to UV radiation\u2014especially in summer, when sun exposure increases significantly and light intensity reaches its peak, particularly at the beach, by the sea, at the lake, etc.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-60b1cbc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"60b1cbc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"1353\" data-end=\"1843\">The <strong data-start=\"1357\" data-end=\"1367\">cornea<\/strong> is the eye\u2019s main natural lens, and since it is located at the front of the eyeball, it is highly exposed to sunlight. In the case of direct and prolonged exposure, particularly during the hours of strongest light intensity, the UV component of sunlight can cause real damage to the <strong data-start=\"1651\" data-end=\"1673\">corneal epithelium<\/strong>, the outermost layer of the cornea. This damage is caused by <strong data-start=\"1735\" data-end=\"1777\">photochemical and photothermal effects<\/strong>, leading to the destruction of epithelial cells and inflammation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dbc0016 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dbc0016\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"1845\" data-end=\"2056\">Corneal inflammation caused by UV rays leads to the typical <strong data-start=\"1905\" data-end=\"1935\">symptoms of photokeratitis<\/strong>: redness, irritation, eye burning, a foreign body sensation, pronounced light sensitivity, tearing, and eyelid swelling.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f5a67ad elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f5a67ad\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"2058\" data-end=\"2600\">Once diagnosed, <strong data-start=\"2074\" data-end=\"2090\">UV keratitis<\/strong> must be treated with <strong data-start=\"2112\" data-end=\"2131\">topical therapy<\/strong> aimed at promoting and facilitating <strong data-start=\"2168\" data-end=\"2192\">re-epithelialization<\/strong>, that is, the regrowth and healing of the damaged corneal epithelium. This may be combined with an antibiotic eye ointment to prevent possible infections. In more severe cases, the specialist may recommend <strong data-start=\"2399\" data-end=\"2422\">mydriatic eye drops<\/strong>\u2014which dilate the pupils\u2014to reduce the risk of adhesions between the cornea and the iris and to help relieve ocular pain. Recovery from photokeratitis can take <strong data-start=\"2582\" data-end=\"2599\">up to 3 weeks<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-19486a9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"19486a9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"2602\" data-end=\"3104\">The <strong data-start=\"2606\" data-end=\"2644\">biological effects of UV radiation<\/strong> on eye health have long been known, so it is essential to be aware of the risks and adopt responsible behaviors. <strong data-start=\"2758\" data-end=\"2791\">Photokeratitis is preventable<\/strong>, and it must be avoided\u2014not only because it can have serious consequences in some cases, but also because <strong data-start=\"2898\" data-end=\"2935\">prolonged or repeated UV exposure<\/strong> can lead not only to photokeratitis and its recurrence, but also to other conditions such as <strong data-start=\"3029\" data-end=\"3103\">pinguecula, pterygium, cataracts, and age-related macular degeneration<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a44845a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a44845a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"3106\" data-end=\"3604\">The eyes must be protected from <strong data-start=\"3138\" data-end=\"3157\">solar radiation<\/strong>, and especially from <strong data-start=\"3179\" data-end=\"3190\">UV rays<\/strong>, by <strong data-start=\"3195\" data-end=\"3241\">avoiding or minimizing direct sun exposure<\/strong> and by wearing <strong data-start=\"3257\" data-end=\"3308\">protective sunglasses with certified UV filters<\/strong>. It is absolutely crucial that lenses are <strong data-start=\"3351\" data-end=\"3364\">certified<\/strong>, because wearing dark lenses <strong data-start=\"3394\" data-end=\"3423\">without proper UV filters<\/strong> can actually increase the risk to eye health\u2014since the pupils dilate behind dark lenses, more UV radiation can reach the retina, leading to <strong data-start=\"3564\" data-end=\"3585\">phototoxic damage<\/strong> to retinal tissue.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-9fe220f elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\"
