The sun has always been considered a source of life and an ally to health; however, it is important to be aware that solar radiation does not bring only benefits. Unfortunately, not everyone is aware of this, and incorrect or careless behaviors can have serious consequences for vision, especially in young people and children, who are often unaware of these risks.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-7dbf785 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"7dbf785\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-f6c3fc4\" data-id=\"f6c3fc4\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a1fcc41 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a1fcc41\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"1055\" data-end=\"1561\">It is important to know that the sun can cause a retinal disease known as <strong data-start=\"1129\" data-end=\"1150\">solar retinopathy<\/strong> (or <strong data-start=\"1155\" data-end=\"1176\">solar maculopathy<\/strong>), which shares many features with the more well-known <strong data-start=\"1231\" data-end=\"1267\">age-related macular degeneration<\/strong> (AMD), a condition increasingly common in the elderly. Solar retinopathy, like AMD, is caused by <strong data-start=\"1365\" data-end=\"1416\">atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)<\/strong> followed by the death of a more or less extensive portion of <strong data-start=\"1478\" data-end=\"1496\">photoreceptors<\/strong> in the macula\u2014the central and most important part of the retina.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-0f66f65 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"0f66f65\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-4d088a0\" data-id=\"4d088a0\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-acb285d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"acb285d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"1563\" data-end=\"1903\">However, solar retinopathy can also be caused by other sources of high-energy light (e.g., lasers, welding tools), especially in the absence of proper eye protection\u2014due to inattention or lack of awareness\u2014particularly in certain environmental and occupational contexts (construction sites, boats, etc.), and among adolescents and children.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-f9e6167 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"f9e6167\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-e21e0a1\" data-id=\"e21e0a1\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d1903b9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d1903b9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"1905\" data-end=\"2116\"><strong data-start=\"1905\" data-end=\"1938\">Symptoms of solar retinopathy<\/strong> include blurred vision, perception of a central or paracentral scotoma, chromatopsia, metamorphopsia, photophobia, and headaches\u2014usually in both eyes, but sometimes in only one.<\/p><p data-start=\"2118\" data-end=\"2679\">To properly diagnose solar retinopathy and assess its severity, several imaging techniques may be used, including <strong data-start=\"2232\" data-end=\"2265\">fundus autofluorescence (FAF)<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2267\" data-end=\"2299\">fluorescein angiography (FA)<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2301\" data-end=\"2343\">multifocal electroretinography (mfERG)<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"2349\" data-end=\"2356\">OCT<\/strong>. In patients with solar retinopathy, the initial fundus exam may appear normal or show macular edema that resolves spontaneously. However, after a few days, a small spot may appear at the fovea, initially white-yellow in color, which later turns red and takes on a well-defined shape\u2014typical features of solar retinopathy.<\/p><p data-start=\"2681\" data-end=\"2985\">\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-82254b5 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"82254b5\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-c91a5b1\" data-id=\"c91a5b1\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-67ef3a5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"67ef3a5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"2681\" data-end=\"2985\">The severity of the clinical condition may vary depending on the intensity, duration, and spectrum of the radiation exposure, but also on factors such as ocular pigmentation, clarity of ocular media, and environmental conditions (e.g., presence of reflective surfaces, atmospheric ozone reduction, etc.).<\/p><p data-start=\"2987\" data-end=\"3525\">\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e64ec2b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"e64ec2b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"2987\" data-end=\"3525\">In some patients, the condition may be <strong data-start=\"3026\" data-end=\"3039\">transient<\/strong>. In such cases, reduced visual acuity may last less than a year, and recovery is often related to the initial visual acuity, the initial rate of recovery, and the degree of visual deficit. In other patients, permanent damage may occur to a portion of the photoreceptors; in these cases, visual acuity may improve but central or paracentral scotomas persist. In the most severe cases, with <strong data-start=\"3429\" data-end=\"3477\">extensive and permanent photoreceptor damage<\/strong>, irreversible vision loss unfortunately occurs.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6bcc6cd elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6bcc6cd\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-09e5b43\" data-id=\"09e5b43\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-66bee98 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"66bee98\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"3527\" data-end=\"4058\">Since there is currently <strong data-start=\"3552\" data-end=\"3590\">no treatment for solar retinopathy<\/strong>, the only way to avoid its serious consequences is to <strong data-start=\"3645\" data-end=\"3724\">avoid exposure to high-energy light sources without adequate eye protection<\/strong>. <strong data-start=\"3726\" data-end=\"3753\">Awareness and education<\/strong> about the dangers to our eyes must be a priority and are the best defense to protect their health.
