The challenges that had hindered the development and dissemination of <strong data-start=\"1202\" data-end=\"1239\">remote treatment in ophthalmology<\/strong> have been overcome thanks to the introduction of the new <strong data-start=\"1297\" data-end=\"1314\">Navilas laser<\/strong>, which incorporates cutting-edge software and medical technologies. These make it suitable both for retinal imaging diagnostics and for the <strong data-start=\"1455\" data-end=\"1475\">remote treatment<\/strong> of various retinal diseases, including diabetic macular edema, proliferative diabetic retinopathy, exudative age-related macular degeneration and some variants of its atrophic form, post-venous thrombosis conditions, peripheral retinal degenerations, retinal tears, and some chronic forms of central serous chorioretinopathy.<\/p><p data-start=\"1803\" data-end=\"2329\">On <strong data-start=\"1806\" data-end=\"1821\">February 22<\/strong>, Andrea Cusumano and Robin Ross marked a historic milestone in tele-ophthalmology by carrying out the <strong data-start=\"1924\" data-end=\"1994\">first remotely guided retinal treatments between Italy and the USA<\/strong>. During this transoceanic session, three patients were treated in total\u2014two in Rome and one in Scottsdale\u2014using twin Navilas devices located at the two respective centers. The procedures, quick and painless, were successfully completed and paved the way for new projects aimed at creating a more agile and equitable healthcare system.<\/p><p data-start=\"2331\" data-end=\"2693\">The two twin lasers enabled real-time sharing of patients\u2019 clinical images and the <strong data-start=\"2414\" data-end=\"2479\">co-planning of the optimal remotely guided treatment protocol<\/strong> for each case. Once finalized, the therapeutic plans were remotely transferred to the devices at the patients\u2019 locations, and each specialist initiated the pre-configured treatment plan for their assigned patient.<\/p><p data-start=\"2695\" data-end=\"3248\">With two or more <strong data-start=\"2712\" data-end=\"2732\">navigated lasers<\/strong>, it becomes possible to conduct diagnostics and plan extremely delicate treatments even if only one of the specialists has the necessary know-how and experience. Navigated lasers rely on a <strong data-start=\"2922\" data-end=\"2954\">safety system (eye-tracking)<\/strong> that ensures perfect execution of the treatment protocol exactly as previously planned by the experts. This is an essential resource for patients undergoing treatments in the <strong data-start=\"3130\" data-end=\"3146\">macular area<\/strong>, where even the slightest error could cause serious and irreversible damage to the retina and vision.<\/p><p data-start=\"3250\" data-end=\"3762\">Treatments performed using the new Navilas laser are not only <strong data-start=\"3312\" data-end=\"3321\">safer<\/strong> but also <strong data-start=\"3331\" data-end=\"3361\">more precise and effective<\/strong> than those performed with conventional lasers. Andrea Cusumano and Robin Ross are actively working to promote this technology and to establish <strong data-start=\"3505\" data-end=\"3536\">reference centers in Europe<\/strong> and, in the future, in <strong data-start=\"3560\" data-end=\"3603\">technologically less advanced countries<\/strong>\u2014to offer their populations not only new therapeutic options but also <strong data-start=\"3673\" data-end=\"3694\">advanced know-how<\/strong> through non-profit educational programs for local ophthalmologists.<\/p><p data-start=\"3764\" data-end=\"4451\">Considering that the navigated laser can be used to treat highly prevalent retinal diseases\u2014which, if untreated, can lead to severe visual impairment or even complete loss of vision\u2014it is clear that the <strong data-start=\"3967\" data-end=\"4004\">impact of this project is immense<\/strong>. It means offering the best ophthalmological expertise in the world to patients living in areas with limited infrastructure and technological resources, or those suffering from major disabilities or severe economic hardship.
